Androgen Targeted Therapy in Salivary Duct Carcinoma of Submandibular Gland-A Case Report

George P

Salivary Duct Carcinomas (SDC’s) are highly aggressive rare neoplasms. Its diagnosis and treatments are clinical challenge to both the treating physician and the pathologist. Primary surgery with or without neck dissection followed with adjuvant radiation treatment is preferred for those with localized SDC s and for metastatic disease the options are limited. Even with localized disease the 5-year survival is less than 30%. Two important biomarkers identified in SDCs are androgen receptors and HER2 receptors. Targeting these receptors is studied by many researchers and this case study represents a successful treatment of a metastatic SDC of submandibular gland with androgen targeted agents. This patient already achieved a disease free survival of 18-months and the treatment is still going on. Further studies to target androgen receptors and more agents to be tried in this clinical setting.
